Mr. Kent’s Updates

We have a busy week ahead with many students participating in activities and traveling for competitions. Please take a moment to remind students to communicate early about any missed class time and to be proactive in requesting their assignments. With basketball and wrestling on the road frequently this season, a gentle reminder can support their success both in class and in competition.

This Week…. Dec 7th - Dec 13th

This week we have 10 days of Christmas Spirit!!! The seminar who has the highest percentage of students participating wins a donut party! 10 days of Christmas

Rowdy Crowd

On Monday, we will be meeting with the Rowdy Crowd to reinforce what it means to create a supportive, positive game day atmosphere. Our goal is to help students understand that great school spirit lifts up our own players, through enthusiasm, energy, and unified cheers. We want our stands to feel electric: the buzz of excitement, voices cheering with purpose, and students leading spirited chants that bring our entire community together. Thank you for continuing to model and encourage what positive pride looks like, sounds like, and feels like at our events.

Eagles Pals

I’ve heard nothing but excitement from our students participating in the Eagle Pals program. When they return from spending time with the 3rd and 4th graders, they are energized and proud of the relationships they are building. This experience is doing more than creating fun moments during lunch and recess, it’s strengthening our school community. Our high schoolers are developing leadership, empathy, and a sense of purpose, while our younger students gain positive role models who make them feel seen, supported, and valued. Programs like this make our schools more connected and vibrant, and we are grateful for everyone who helps make it possible each week.

Esports

Esports is still a fairly new opportunity in schools, and we are grateful to offer such a strong program here at HHS. Mr. Kennedy has brought tremendous energy and creativity by building engagement, organizing after school practices, and finding new ways to promote our teams. His leadership is making a real impact.

Last weekend, our students competed in the Fortnite State Championship and absolutely shined:

State Champions: Aiden Conner & Kaylor Regensberg

State Runner-Up: Aislee Austin & Brystyn Heger

4th Place: Wyatt Johnson & Riley Pennington

We are incredibly proud of all our participants for representing HHS with skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The future of Esports here is bright!

5 States Honor Band

On Friday, December 12th, five outstanding Hugoton High School musicians will represent our school at the 2025 Five States Honor Band in Guymon, OK! These students earned their spots through a competitive live audition in November, placing them among top musicians across Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico.

They will spend the day collaborating with talented peers from across the region and working under the direction of a distinguished clinician from Hutchinson Community College, leading up to a performance that evening.

Please help us celebrate these exceptional students:

Alan Ornelas Cruz – Trumpet

Lino Eliel Martinez Perez – Trumpet

Jefferson Diaz – Percussion

Julian Lee – Clarinet

Jesus Maldonado – Trombone

Their achievement showcases the strength of our music program and the dedication of Mr. Harding who helps students shine beyond the classroom. We are incredibly proud of them, go Eagles!

Essay Competition Winner

We are excited to share that Emiliano Cruz has been selected as one of only four national winners in the Black and Latino Men Read Essay Contest! Students from high schools and colleges across the United States competed, and Emiliano’s outstanding writing earned him this impressive honor.

This achievement not only recognizes his talent and hard work, but also provides meaningful support for his future college goals.

Please join us in congratulating Emiliano on this incredible accomplishment, we are so proud of him!

From Emiliano,

I am very grateful for this scholarship and the opportunity it provides. I will be using the scholarship money to help pay for my college tuition at Washburn University, where I plan to major in accounting. The support brings me closer to my goal of one day becoming an accountant and contributes to my future. Thank you to the scholarship committee for believing in me and helping me take this important step forward.

Next Week… Dec 14th - Dec 19th

Last week before break and finals week! We will still have plenty of activities in full swing and it will be another busy but productive week.

Looking Ahead…

Christmas Break!!!! I hope you all enjoy your two weeks of hibernation and gift giving!

Quote for the Week!
