Mr. Kent’s Updates
Hopefully everyone is recovering and ready to push on this week. As usual we have a lot of moving parts and we will be hosting basketball two nights this week as well.
We would also like to extend a special thank you to our staff and students for their calm and responsible response during the fire alarm on Friday. Everyone remained composed, and together we ensured that students were kept safe and warm by moving them to appropriate shelter areas. Once we received the all clear from our fast and efficient firefighters and police officers, everyone returned to class and got back to work seamlessly.
A special shoutout goes to Cameron Persing, who participates in Work Based Learning with the Fire Department. His assistance during the situation was greatly appreciated. Thank you all for working together to keep our school community safe and for demonstrating what teamwork looks like.

Esports
Congratulations to Jesus Maldanado, Jacob Payne, and Jonathan Ortiz on an outstanding Super Smash Brothers victory over the #3 ranked Olathe West Owls! This impressive win has propelled the Hugoton Super Smash team to #5 in the state out of 115 teams and earned them a spot in the first-ever KSHSAA Esports playoffs, where only the top eight teams in Kansas qualify. What an incredible accomplishment and a true testament to their skill, teamwork, and dedication. Great job, and best of luck in the playoffs!
FFA Train the Trainer
An Ag sponsor will be visiting to work with our freshman students, focusing on how to inspire and educate elementary students about agriculture. This is a great opportunity for our freshmen to develop leadership and communication skills while learning how to share their passion for Ag in meaningful ways. It’s also a wonderful way to spark interest and excitement about FFA among our elementary students and strengthen the connection between our programs.
Commodities
This is a continuation of work we did in the fall through a state food assistance program, with the Methodist Church picking up food from Liberal and our students volunteering to help sort and distribute items to families at the VFW. HOSA students are participating as part of our program’s focus on service, leadership, and the betterment of our community.
HOSA Blood Drive
Thank you to all of our parents and community members who have signed up to donate blood. Your generosity truly makes a difference. By giving, you are not only helping save lives, but also supporting our students and school in a meaningful way. If you need to cancel your appointment, please let Mrs. Fann know as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly.
With your support, we are hopeful to earn four $250 scholarships, and every donation brings us closer to that goal. Your willingness to give back speaks volumes about the strength and heart of our community. If you do not remember your scheduled donation time, please feel free to contact Mrs. Fann for assistance. Thank you again for showing up for others and for our students!
Robotics Community service (Move to this weekend due to weather and illnesses)
The Robotics team will be traveling to Liberal on Saturday, January 24th to participate in a community service project. Team members will be assisting the FIRST LEGO League tournament director by helping build official game tables for the upcoming tournament scheduled for March. This hands-on service opportunity allows students to apply their problem solving and teamwork skills beyond the classroom while supporting younger students and promoting STEM education throughout the region. We are proud of our Robotics team for giving their time and talents to support the broader FIRST LEGO League community.
Seniors Parents Only
We are excited to share a new scholarship identification opportunity available to our Hugoton High School seniors. Our school is partnering with VU Scholarships, to help students explore potential post-secondary scholarship opportunities that match their academic achievements.
Through the VU Scholarships program, students’ academic information is used to identify possible scholarship offers from colleges and universities that partner with VU Scholarships. This gives students and families a clearer picture of the opportunities that may be available after graduation. Participation in this program does not require students to apply to or attend any institution, it simply provides information so families can make informed choices.
With parent or guardian consent, Hugoton High School will securely share limited student data with VU Scholarships to begin the matching process. We are excited about the opportunities this may open for our seniors and are committed to supporting students and families throughout the process. Please feel free to reach out with any questions as we move forward.
Next Week… Feb 1st - Feb 7th
Parent Teacher Conferences are getting closer! Make sure all our students have all their assignments turned in and are ready to share what passions they want to pursue after graduation. Conferences are on Monday Feb 2nd from 4 pm to 8 pm and Thursday Feb 5th from 8 am to 8 pm.
Looking Ahead…
Winter sports are starting to wind down with girls wrestling heading into regionals, boys wrestling the following week, and basketball sub-state the week after that.
Quote for the Week!
