Mr. Kent’s Updates

The tone we set each day has a powerful impact on student effort, behavior, and achievement. That influence doesn’t stop at school. At home, parents play an equally important role in shaping confidence and motivation. Simple actions like greeting your child with encouragement, asking about their day, and recognizing effort (not just grades) can make a meaningful difference. Praise progress, celebrate improvement, and communicate high expectations with support and belief in their ability to succeed. When challenges arise, address the behavior calmly while reinforcing that mistakes are opportunities to grow. Positive environments are not about lowering standards; they are about creating structure, consistency, and encouragement so students feel capable and supported. Together, we can ensure our students walk into school each day feeling confident, prepared, and ready to learn.

This Week…. Feb 22nd - Feb 28th

ACT Testing

Make sure all our junior students take advantage of this opportunity and are well rested! All juniors will take the ACT on Tuesday.  Students will report to the cafeteria and we will separate them by testing rooms from there.  Their book bags/belongings will be locked up downstairs during testing.  Testing will run until lunch time.  If students have their own calculator, it is encouraged they bring it.  They may ask the math teachers to borrow theirs, but they don't have enough for everyone.

SCCC CTE Expo

We’re excited for the upcoming SCCC CTE Expo, where 50 of our students will explore potential VoTech pathways for next school year! This is a great opportunity for them to learn more about hands-on career options, ask questions, and begin thinking seriously about their future plans. We’re proud to see so many students taking initiative, and we look forward to seeing how many choose to take this next step toward their career goals!

Art Scholastic competition in Montezuma

This is a wonderful opportunity for our student artists to experience a competitive art show firsthand, view artwork displayed in a professional gallery setting, and be photographed for a local press release. The exhibition represents the hard work they put in earlier this year and gives them a real-world glimpse into what participating in a professional art career can look like. As part of the experience, students will also visit the Dodge City Carnegie Art Center, allowing them to explore another working art center in a larger city environment and further expand their exposure to the arts.

DECA Leadership Challenge Event

The Washburn Leadership Challenge Event is an exciting two-day leadership competition hosted by Washburn University’s Aleshire Center for Leadership and Community Engagement. This unique event brings together high school and college students to participate in a live, interactive simulation that mirrors real-world leadership challenges.

Students compete in teams of five, working together to solve problems, make decisions, and respond to obstacles in a way that demonstrates strong leadership skills. The outcomes of the simulation depend on the decisions students make throughout the competition, giving them valuable hands-on experience in teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.

The event is built on the belief that leadership is not just a title, but a process. It provides students with meaningful opportunities to grow as leaders, gain practical experience, and connect with peers from across the state in a competitive and rewarding environment.

KMEA All-State Honor Band and Choir

We’re excited to share that Samantha Romero and Kinley Howie have been selected to participate in a three-day All-State Honor Choir event! This prestigious experience brings together some of the top singers from across Kansas for an unforgettable weekend of music, collaboration, and growth. It’s one of the most rewarding opportunities a choir student can have, and we are incredibly proud of their hard work and talent. The event will conclude with a concert on Saturday, what a fantastic achievement for these two outstanding students!
