This Week…. Mar 8th - Mar 14th
As winter activities begin to wind down, this week provides a great opportunity for our students to stay focused, active, and engaged in their learning. Even with a lighter activity schedule, our teachers and staff remain committed to maintaining strong classroom routines and meaningful learning experiences so that students continue building momentum as we move closer to spring break.
We also have several outstanding student accomplishments to celebrate at Hugoton High School, and we are incredibly proud of the way our students continue to represent our school and community. Their hard work, dedication, and leadership, both in the classroom and in activities are a reflection of the strong support they receive from our families, staff, and community. Thank you for the continued encouragement and partnership that helps make these successes possible.
Eagle Pals
At the upcoming Board of Education meeting, our NHS Eagle Pals will be sharing about their experiences and the meaningful connections they have built with our third and fourth grade students during lunch and recess. This program has been a wonderful opportunity for our high school students to serve as positive role models while building supportive relationships with younger students in our district.
We are very proud of the outstanding group of students who have chosen to participate in Eagle Pals. Their willingness to give their time, encourage younger students, and help create a welcoming and supportive environment truly reflects the character and leadership we strive to develop at Hugoton High School.
I am especially grateful that our students were excited to bring this program back, and we appreciate the leadership and guidance of Mrs. Alvarado in helping make it possible. Her support has played a key role in creating an experience that is both impactful for our younger students and rewarding for our high school leaders.
HOSA
Our HOSA students recently competed at the state level against 1,238 competitors, and many of our members earned Top 10 finishes as well as qualifications for the International Leadership Conference in Indianapolis this June. In addition to their competitive success, Coach O and Mrs. Fann shared how respectful and well-mannered our students were throughout the event. Their behavior and professionalism stood out and represented Hugoton extremely well.
We are also proud to recognize Mrs. Fann, who was honored with both the Chapter Advisor of the Year Award and the Educational Excellence Award, an incredible recognition of her leadership and dedication to our students.
Two students have already secured their place at the International Leadership Conference. Olivia Salmans earned 1st place in Occupational Therapy, and Madai Ortiz earned 2nd place in Nursing Assisting. Several additional students placed in the Top 10 and may still qualify for the international conference once final placements are confirmed in April. These students include Alaina and Kamryn in Forensic Science; Haiden and Annabelle in Forensic Science and Biotechnology; Lauren in Surgical Technology; Alexa, Kadence, and Jennifer in Health Education Promotion; Kynli and Kamryn in Health Career Photography; and Katelynn in Prepared Speaking. Kassidy and Olivia also earned 2nd place in the pilot Physician Assistant event, where they will be recognized even though pilot events do not qualify for nationals.
As a chapter, Hugoton HOSA was also the only school to earn the Gold HOSA Stars Chapter Award, highlighting the strength of our program. In addition, Olivia earned a Bronze Barbara James Community Service Award, while Kamryn and Kassidy earned Silver Barbara James Awards. Our chapter also earned the Gold American Red Cross Award for hosting two successful blood drives this year. Beyond competing, students participated in breakout sessions, connected with college representatives, and networked with HOSA members from across the state.
Perfect Attendance for the month of February
We also want to recognize students for their commitment to being present and engaged in school. In February, 68 students achieved perfect attendance with zero absences and zero tardies. As part of a new initiative to encourage strong attendance habits, five students were randomly selected to receive a $20 attendance incentive prize. Congratulations to Aden Pineda, Jasmine Sena, Paty Zizumbo, Adrian De La Cerda, and Cameron Rosas.
DECA
DECA students recently competed in the Leadership Challenge Event hosted by Washburn University, where 38 teams from high schools and colleges participated. Our Hugoton team earned the Highest Performance Award and the 2026 Emerging Leader Award, a testament to their preparation, teamwork, and leadership. In addition to competing, students had the opportunity to meet State Representative Marty Long and tour the Kansas State Capitol, even climbing nearly 300 steps to the top of the Capitol dome, creating a memorable learning experience beyond the competition.
Congratulations to Gracie Gill, Nikayla Vos, Aneta Morris, Isaias Marquez, and Katelynn Willis for representing Hugoton High School with excellence, integrity, and pride.
We are incredibly grateful to our teachers, advisors, and community for continuing to support these programs and provide opportunities for our students to grow, compete, and succeed.
