Mr. Kent’s Updates

This week marks one of the most exciting and meaningful times of the school year as we celebrate the Class of 2026 and prepare for graduation. The week will be filled with senior finals, traditions, recognition events, walkthroughs, graduation practice, and ultimately commencement ceremonies as our seniors close one chapter and prepare to begin the next.

While this week moves quickly and involves many moving parts, it is also a week focused on celebrating accomplishments, recognizing growth, and creating lasting memories for our students and families. Staff, students, and families will all play an important role in helping ensure the week runs smoothly and remains a positive experience for everyone involved.

This Week…. May 10th - May 16th

Students testing early

As we move into finals week and postseason activities, we want to keep parents informed on a few adjustments that will be taking place for some students due to regional competitions and activity schedules.

Several students involved in postseason activities will need to complete finals on adjusted schedules in order to accommodate travel and competition dates. Students participating in golf regionals will complete their finals early next week, as they will be gone on May 18th and 19th. Their final day for checkout will be Friday, May 15th.

In addition, softball and baseball students involved in postseason play will complete their odd hour finals (1st, 3rd, Seminar, and 7th hours) between May 10th and May 15th. These teams are expected to compete either May 18th or 19th, although exact schedules will not be finalized until later this week. On the day students are present at school, they will complete their even hour finals (2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th hours). Because postseason rosters are not finalized until May 13th, we are proactively planning for all potential participants to ensure students are able to complete exams without issue.

We appreciate everyone’s flexibility as we work through these scheduling adjustments. If additional accommodations are needed, students may test in alternative locations such as the conference room or library, or remain in a classroom for extended testing periods. Our goal is to make sure students are able to successfully complete finals while still participating in these important activities and representing HHS.

Checkout Process Updates

As we worked through senior checkout procedures, we identified several ways to help make the process smoother and more efficient for underclassmen next week.

A major area that created delays was technology checkout, specifically iPads not being fully charged. Parents can help tremendously by reminding students to bring their iPads fully charged  and cleaned before checkout. Devices must be charged, clean, and ready in order to complete the process.

Finally, the more items students can complete ahead of time, the smoother the process will go. We encourage students to turn in missing assignments, books, equipment, pay fees, and any outstanding materials as soon as possible to help avoid delays during checkout week.

We appreciate everyone’s patience, flexibility, and support as we work through one of the busiest times of the school year while helping students finish strong.

Staff will continue supporting students through clear communication, accountability, and encouragement as they finish their final days as Hugoton High School students.

Wednesday, May 13th – Senior Walkthrough & Senior Showcase

Wednesday will be one of the most memorable days of the week as seniors participate in the annual Senior Walkthrough and Senior Showcase and checkout for the last time.

Senior Walkthrough

The morning begins with students arriving in the old gym to receive caps and gowns before taking the official senior class photo in front of the historic building. Seniors will then travel together to multiple district buildings, including:

  • Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC)

  • Elementary School

  • Pioneer Manor

  • Middle School

The walkthrough tradition provides students an opportunity to reconnect with teachers, younger students, and community members who have played a role in their educational journey. It also allows younger students to see and celebrate what their future can become.

Following the walkthrough, seniors who were not exempt from finals will complete their checkout procedures with teachers, technology staff, and the front office before meeting with graduation speakers to finalize preparations for commencement.

Senior Showcase – 6:30 PM

Later this evening, Hugoton High School will host the Senior Showcase in the High School Cafeteria. This special event will recognize:

  • Scholarships

  • Awards

  • Academic achievements

  • Military appointments

  • Student accomplishments

  • Senior acknowledgements

Families, guests, staff, and community members are invited to attend as we celebrate the accomplishments and future plans of the Class of 2026.

Friday, May 15th – Graduation Practice

Graduation practice will take place Friday morning on the football field and will focus on ensuring students are fully prepared for commencement ceremonies.

Students will rehearse:

  • Processional procedures

  • Seating arrangements

  • Walking across the stage

  • Name announcements

  • Graduation etiquette and expectations

Graduation speakers will also rehearse using the microphone system and review final speech preparations.

This practice plays an important role in helping students feel confident, prepared, and organized heading into graduation day while also ensuring the ceremony runs smoothly for families and guests.

Saturday, May 16th – Graduation Day

Graduation day will officially celebrate the accomplishments of the Hugoton High School Class of 2026.

Preparations for commencement will begin early Saturday morning as staff finalize seating arrangements, decorations, flowers, programs, and ceremony setup. Seniors will arrive prior to the ceremony for individual pictures and final preparations before lining up for the procession.

At 10:00 AM, the Board of Education and administration will lead the processional as seniors officially enter the field for commencement exercises.

The ceremony will include:

  • Student welcome addresses

  • Recognition of academic accomplishments

  • Scholarship and honors acknowledgements

  • Graduation speeches

  • Diploma presentations

  • Final recognition of the Class of 2026

Graduation represents not only the conclusion of a school year, but also the celebration of years of hard work, growth, perseverance, and achievement by our students, families, and staff.

As we move through this important week, Hugoton High School remains focused on celebrating our seniors, supporting students through the final steps of graduation, and creating meaningful memories that students and families will carry with them long after they leave our halls.

Looking Ahead…

Now it is the undergraduates turn to checkout, take finals, and finish strong.
