Mr. Kent’s Updates
As we celebrate Homecoming, HHS remains focused on three important priorities: Relationships, Routines, and Rigor. We are committed to ensuring every student feels known and supported, understands the expectations that help create a positive learning environment, and receives meaningful, challenging instruction. With the school year underway, we are building the consistent habits that will support our students’ growth and success throughout the year. We appreciate the continued partnership of our families and community as we work together to help every student thrive.

A big thank you to Pizza Hut and Becky Bustillos
I reached out to the manager of Pizza Hut Becky Bustillos, and she graciously gave us coupons for students who are top-notch. They will be students who participate every day, help others, show up on time ready to learn, pick up a random piece of trash others walk by, or perform any kind of small acts of kindness that brightens someone else's day.
Each week we will randomly pick 3 students, share the amazing deed they did, and give them a coupon.
School Spirit
We also have free large 1-topping pizza coupons or as some might say the “big kahuna” coupon for our student cheering section.
Each week we will pick the student with the most spirit. Who is cheering positively, loudly, encouraging our teams, and joining in when the cheerleaders start a cheer. If you notice someone who you think deserves it please share it with me.

Homecoming Parade!
Here is what our families and community can expect for the Homecoming Parade!
Band students will get dismissed at 1:45 to get their instruments ready. (they are playing for Pioneer Manor residents).
All students riding floats and cheerleaders will get dismissed at 1:45.
The floats will leave the front of the middle school at 2:00 to be through pioneer manor at 2:20 to be in front of the elementary school by 2:30.
All other students will be dismissed at 2:30 and will walk to Main Street for the pep rally. The pep rally will START at 2:45.
Floats will leave the front of the school and go down Madison Street where we will line up in a parade format. We will then go past the Elementary and head toward Main on 5th street. The city will have 5th to 7th street blocked off. Once they get to where the houses are on Main Street, they will stop, park and walk back to the traffic light and then the speeches and parade will begin!

We have Justice Walsh and Judge Ambrosier talking in the Auditorium From 2:30 to 3:30. I was told she is brilliant and a very intelligent person with a knack for public speaking.
September 22 special session in Liberal. If you are interested this would be a great opportunity!
The Kansas Supreme Court announced the case it will hear in a special session, in Liberal, the next destination in the court's ongoing outreach to familiarize Kansans with the court, its work, and the overall role of the Kansas judiciary.
The court will be in session from 6:30 p.m. to about 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, at Liberal High School, 1611 W 2nd St., Liberal. A brief informational session before oral argument will start about 6:15 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the special session to observe the court as it hears oral argument in one case. After oral argument, the justices will greet the public in an informal reception.
“We invite the residents of Liberal and surrounding communities to join us at Liberal High School where we will hear this case,” Chief Justice Eric Rosen said. “It’s a great way to get to know our court, what we do, and how we do it. Plus, we want to meet you at the reception afterward.”

The case on the September 22 docket is:
Appeal No. 127,854: State of Kansas (Appellee) v. Douglas Moser (Appellant)
Harvey County: (Petition for Review): A sheriff's deputy stopped Moser for a seat belt violation after he got a message from a detective that there was an outstanding warrant for Moser’s passenger. While the sheriff’s deputy verified Moser’s license, registration, and insurance, the passenger admitted to the detective who was now at the scene that he was carrying drugs. When the deputy heard this, he asked Moser to exit the vehicle so he could search it. Before the search, he did a weapons pat-down of Moser and found what felt like a needle, which he confirmed when he removed it from Moser's pocket. The deputy did not find incriminating evidence in Moser's vehicle. He arrested Moser for possession of drug paraphernalia. After placing him under arrest, the deputy found Moser had a box with crystals in it, later confirmed to be methamphetamine. A jury found Moser guilty of possession of a controlled substance. The district court denied Moser’s motion for a new trial.
On appeal Moser claims: 1) law enforcement unconstitutionally extended the scope of his traffic stop; 2) law enforcement unconstitutionally conducted a pat-down because the alleged consent was not valid and there was no reasonable suspicion that he was armed and dangerous; 3) law enforcement unconstitutionally removed a needle from his pocket by failing to meet the plain view or plain feel exception to the warrant requirement; 4) his arrest and seizure of evidence was unconstitutional because there was no probable cause of criminal activity particular to Moser; and 5) trial counsel provided ineffective assistance. The Court of Appeals affirmed. The Supreme Court granted Moser’s petition for review on his first four issues.

Attend the special session
Anyone who wants to attend the special session in person should plan to arrive early to allow time to get through security screening. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Court security offers these guidelines to ease the screening process:
Do not bring food or drink.
Do not bring large bags, large purses, backpacks, computer cases, or briefcases. Small handbags are permitted.
Do not bring knives, pepper spray, firearms, or weapons.
Do not bring electronic devices such as laptop computers, handheld games, personal digital assistants, or tablets. If you must carry a cell phone, turn it off and store it out of sight while court is in session.
Decorum during oral argument
Audience members must not talk during oral argument because it interferes with the attorneys’ remarks and questions asked by justices. Talking immediately outside the auditorium is also discouraged.
If someone arrives after proceedings start, or must leave the auditorium before it ends, they should be as quiet as possible entering and exiting the auditorium.
