Mr. Kent’s Updates

As we finish October, let’s build on our parent teacher conferences by helping students take their next step. A quick check in at home can show your student that school and family are working together to support them.

Choose one small way to help this week. Sit down together to review assignments, help your student choose one task to finish first, or set a regular time and place for schoolwork. If they feel overwhelmed, help them break a larger assignment into smaller steps. Ask, “What is going well?” and “What feels difficult right now?” Sometimes, listening is the best place to start.

Encourage your student to ask questions and reach out to teachers when they need help. You do not need to know every answer to support their learning. Helping them write an email, prepare a question, or make a plan to speak with a teacher can build confidence and independence.

Keep classroom and seminar teachers informed about what you are noticing at home. If a routine is helping or your student is becoming frustrated, please share that with us. Together, we can find an approach that fits your student’s needs.

Keep expectations high while recognizing progress. Be specific: “I noticed you got started without a reminder,” “I’m proud of you for asking for help,” or “You stuck with that even when it was difficult.” These small moments help students recognize the choices that move them forward.

This week, ask yourself: What is one small way I can support my student? Do they understand their next step? What should I share with their teachers? How can I show them that I notice their progress?

This Week…

Celebrating Our Eagles!

Please join us in recognizing students who make Hugoton High School a place of pride, kindness, and hard work. Parents, community members, and staff help us celebrate these Eagles when you see them!

School Spirit Spotlight

Corde Stang – Corde brings energy and Eagle pride to the stands! He cheers enthusiastically for our teams and knows when to refocus and keep that enthusiasm positive. Thank you, Corde, for showing up, cheering loudly, and helping make our school events memorable!

Students of the Week

Jasmine Sena – Jasmine showed leadership by speaking up for a clean school and supporting a teacher’s directions. When another student was asked to pick up a discarded water bottle, Jasmine encouraged him to do the right thing and reassured Mrs. Sosa, “We’ve got you covered.” Thank you, Jasmine, for showing respect, taking pride in our school, and encouraging others to do the same!

Kash Kallenbach – Kash brings a positive attitude and a strong work ethic to class every day. He takes responsibility for his learning, stays focused, and puts in the effort without needing reminders. His steady commitment and cheerful outlook make him someone others can count on. Thank you, Kash, for setting such a strong example!

Suemy Rojas Peinado – In just two months in our district, Suemy has already made an impression on her teachers! She has shown tremendous growth in English while maintaining straight A’s. She asks questions, uses available resources, and advocates for what she needs to succeed. She also encourages classmates to “lock in” and get their work done! Multiple teachers have recognized her determination, willingness to take on challenges, and courage to practice English as she learns. We are proud of you, Suemy, and glad you are part of our Eagle family!

These students remind us that school pride shines through our enthusiasm, our daily effort, and the way we treat others. Thank you to the families, staff, and community members who encourage them along the way!

Reality U

All 10th-grade students will report to the gym for an interactive, 90-minute financial simulation that puts them in the shoes of their 26-year-old selves. Based on choices they make during high school, students will explore how education, career paths, and everyday expenses can shape their future. This hands on experience gives students a meaningful glimpse into life after graduation and the financial responsibilities of adulthood.

Pumpkin Carving

The FFA Pumpkin Carving and games with our first graders from 12:45 pm to 3:30 pm in the AG shop. It will be a good time and it is always heart warming to see our high schoolers guide our youth by being caring and leading by example.

Senior Families, We Need Your Help!

Senior year is full of exciting moments, and we want to make sure your student’s memories are included in the yearbook! Please check with your senior to make sure their senior ads, yearbook photos, and baby pictures have been submitted to Mrs. Yowell.

With so much happening, a little encouragement from home can help keep these details on track. A big thank you to Mrs. Yowell for her patience, reminders, and hard work gathering everything that helps make our seniors’ yearbook special!

Red Ribbon Week

Ask your student about their seminar class and if they are participating. Who knows their class might win a pizza party!

RED RIBBON

Dress up for Halloween

I have received a lot of requests to have a costume day for all our high schoolers who love to trick or treat. On Friday we will have a Halloween costume day!
