Mr. Kent’s Updates
With three weeks remaining until Thanksgiving break, families can help students pause, review their progress, and choose one clear, manageable goal to accomplish before the break. This might include completing a missing assignment, improving a grade, arriving at school prepared and on time, asking a teacher for help, or staying more focused in class.
At home, consider reviewing grades and assignments together and asking, “What is one goal you want to accomplish before Thanksgiving?” Then help your student identify a specific first step and set aside time to complete it. Continue offering encouragement, but allow your student to take responsibility for the work. Helpful questions include, “What can you finish today?” “What is your next step?” and “What support do you need from your teachers or from us at home?”
Recognize progress along the way, even when the goal has not yet been fully reached. Acknowledging that your student asked for help, completed an overdue assignment, or studied without being reminded reinforces the habits we want to see continue. Three weeks provides plenty of time for meaningful growth when families, students, and school staff work together with clear expectations, consistent encouragement, and shared accountability.
This Week…
Celebrating Our Teacher of the Year Nominee: Nathan Piper
The man, the myth, the legend! We are incredibly proud to recognize Mr. Piper as our Teacher of the Year nominee!
He has earned the respect of his students through his firm, straightforward, and fair approach to teaching. In student surveys, they consistently share how much they appreciate knowing exactly where they stand with him. He communicates clear expectations, holds students accountable, and provides the structure they need to succeed.
A visit to his classroom reveals students actively participating, thinking deeply, and engaging in meaningful learning. He continually finds creative ways to challenge students, draw out their ideas, and guide them toward answers rather than simply providing them. His classroom reflects the high expectations, consistency, and commitment he brings to HHS each day.
This recognition has been a long time coming and is certainly well deserved. Please join us in congratulating him and thanking him for the positive difference he continues to make in the lives of our students. Congratulations!
Celebrating Our Eagles!
This week, we are proud to recognize several students whose kindness, leadership, and school spirit help make Hugoton High School such a special place. These moments remind us that character is often revealed through the small choices students make when they are not seeking recognition.
Students of the Week
Aaron Fabela demonstrated outstanding character during lunch when another student accidentally spilled an entire tray, creating a large mess. Although Aaron had nothing to do with the spill, he immediately stepped in to help clean it up. Even after a staff member offered to take over, Aaron stayed and continued helping until the job was finished. Thank you, Aaron, for recognizing a need and choosing to help without being asked!
Matisyn Newmon also stepped forward to help clean up the spilled lunch. She could have easily walked past, but instead, she chose to assist and continued working even after being told that someone else could finish. Matisyn’s willingness to help shows kindness, responsibility, and genuine concern for others. Thank you, Matisyn, for helping make HHS a caring and supportive school!
Chris Jenkins showed leadership and encouragement by helping another student find direction on an art project in Mr. Terrill’s class. He thoughtfully offered ideas and advice about the colors the student could use, helping a classmate feel more confident moving forward. Thank you, Chris, for sharing your creativity and using your knowledge to support someone else!
School Spirit Spotlight
Emma Martinez Camacho showed tremendous Eagle pride by making the trip to Goodland to support our students and teams. Traveling that distance takes time and dedication, and her presence helped remind our participants that their school community is behind them. Thank you, Emma, for showing up, cheering on our Eagles, and representing the spirit of HHS!
Please help us congratulate these outstanding students when you see them. Their kindness, helpfulness, creativity, and school pride make a meaningful difference, and we are incredibly proud to call them Hugoton Eagles!
Coming up…
Veterans Day, the HOSA Blood Drive, and Buffer Week are quickly approaching! Join us as we honor those who have served our country, support a lifesaving cause by donating blood, and help our students finish strong. It is going to be a meaningful and exciting week at HHS!
Quote for the Week!
“Appreciation can change a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.”
